Lutein and Zeaxanthin are nutritionally important carotenoids that protect healthy cells from oxida-tive stress and free radical damage. Lutein and Zeaxanthin have immunostimulant and photopro-tectant properties. Recent research has shown that these important carotenoids are major eye pigments of the retina. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are especially concentrated in rods which are specialized light-sensitive cell or photoprotector in retina and responsible for black and white vision in the dark. Scientific evidence clearly suggests that Lutein and Zeaxanthin has important role in the retina to protect tissue from the damaging effects of high-energy blue spectrum light.
