Tart cherry inhibits xanthine oxidase so that monosodium crystal is not formed in the joints and also reduces the extraction of urate from the kidney. It suppresses the expression of inflammatory markers and also cyclooxygenase enzymes. It also has the capacity to scavenge free radicals. Tart cherry is widely used for the treatment of gout, muscle pain and stiffness, joint pain, and inflammation due to osteoarthritis and also peripheral neuropathy.
